As one of the first groups to be dubbed "the next Smiths," James became an institution on the British alternative music scene of the '80s and '90s with their pleasant folk-pop. Early in their career, James were blessed by praise from their idol Morrissey, which turned out to be both a blessing and a curse. The group was pegged as second-rate Smiths, yet continued to tour and record, eventually gaining a sizable following. In the late '80s, the group, like many of their British peers, became involved in the acid house-inspired "baggy" scene and recorded the baggy-inspired "Sit Down," which became their breakthrough hit. Shortly after "Sit Down," James became more experimental, culminating in a collaboration with Brian Eno that resulted in their biggest American album, Laid, in 1993. James took four years to follow Laid, by which time their audience had returned to a cult following.
James formed in Manchester in 1982, when Paul Gilbertson (guitar), Jim Glennie (bass), and Gavan Whelan (drums) met Tim Booth (vocals) at Manchester University and asked him to join their fledgling band. During the next year, the band became regulars on the local club circuit, and by 1983, they had signed to Factory, releasing their debut EP, Jimone, later that year. Two years later, their second EP, James II, was released, and Morrissey, the lead singer of the Smiths, publicly endorsed the group, asking them to open for his group. By the summer of 1985, Larry Gott had replaced Gilbertson, and the group signed to Sire Records. Working with producer Lenny Kaye, the group recorded its debut, Stutter, that year, releasing it in early 1986 to generally positive reviews.
Over the next two years, James toured constantly, building up a solid fan base. They released their second album, the folky Strip-Mine, in 1988. The record failed to capitalize on their live following, and the band departed Sire the following year, signing with the independent Rough Trade. On their new label, James released the moderately successful "Sit Down" and the live album One Man Clapping, which climbed to number one on the indie charts. In 1990, Whelan was replaced by David Baynton-Power, and James expanded to a septet with the addition of keyboardist Mark Hunter, violinist Saul Davies, and trumpeter Andy Diagram. The new lineup signed to Fontana Records and released Gold Mother in the fall. Following a handful of minor hit singles, Gold Mother finally became a breakthrough success in the spring of 1991, when a re-recorded version of "Sit Down" -- now boasting a contemporary baggy beat -- climbed to number two on the U.K. charts and became a staple on U.S. modern rock radio. Although the success of "Sit Down" was a blessing, it also was a curse, as the single became all James were known for. The band began to rebel in concert, playing almost nothing but new material, and their next album, 1992's Seven, was perceived as a misguided stab at big arena rock.
For the follow-up to Seven, James stripped away Diagram and worked with producer Brian Eno. The resulting record, Laid, was a quieter, more ambitious album, and it received some of the band's best reviews. While the album was ignored in the U.K., it was an alternative rock hit in the U.S. on the strength of the title track, which became a crossover hit. During the Laid sessions, James recorded another album's worth of experimental music with Eno that was released in the fall of 1994 as Wah Wah. The album received mixed reviews and the group took an extended break throughout 1995, partly due to guitarist Gott's departure. In 1996, Tim Booth recorded a collaboration with composer Angelo Badalamenti (Twin Peaks, Blue Velvet) entitled Booth and the Bad Angel, which received generally positive reviews. With guitarist Adrian Oxaal in tow, James returned in early 1997 with Whiplash, a more straightforward record that was greeted with mixed reviews. 1999's Millionaires, recorded with new guitarist Michael Kulas, was initially released only in the U.K. Their spectacular follow up, 2001's Pleased to Meet You, was also available only in the U.K. A few months later, frontman Tim Booth announced his departure from the band he founded nearly 20 years before, citing that it was the right time to go. A winter tour of the U.K. was slated for December 2001, marking Booth's last with the band. The remaining members insisted they'd carry on; however, James officially called it quits at the tour's end. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine.

Stutter was the debut album from English band James, released in June 1986. The album was produced by Lenny Kaye, although the band had originally hoped to work with Brian Eno. After a bidding war between a number of labels, the album was released on Blanco y Negro, part of Sire. Artwork was provided by John Carroll. The album initially received positive responses in the UK and Germany where it was voted second best album of the year by writers (and 16th by readers) of the influential indie magazine Spex. Allmusic called it "Thin, spiky, jagged folk music" and commented on the performances by the band: "Tim Booth is a mere bystander to his wild vocals while the rest of the band watch Gavan Whelan have an absolute fit on — what sounds like — four drum kits at once. This is shoddy, shameless chaos. Nothing more than a terribly produced mess of tragic rock-star baiting and deliberate discordance. An amazing debut."

Gold Mother was the third studio album from English band James, originally released June 1990. The album was recorded for Rough Trade Records, but James asked to be released from their contract with them and moved to Fontana. After the success of a Flood Mix of "Come Home" and the non-album singles "Lose Control" and "Sit Down", the album was re-released almost a year later to include these tracks, replacing other tracks on the album. Laid is the sixth release and fifth studio album by the British alternative rock band James. It was released on October 5, 1993. It was the first of several collaborations between the group and Brian Eno, who produced all but one of the album's tracks - in Stuart Maconie's authorised biography of the group, Folklore, they admitted that Eno didn't like the song "One of the Three" so they recorded it when he took a day off. The sessions also resulted in the experimental Wah Wah album.

Wah Wah (1994)
BAND MEMBERS:
* Larry Gott - guitar
* Mark Hunter- keys
* Tim Booth - vocals
* David Baynton-Power - drums
* Saul Davies - violin, guitar
* Jim Glennie - bass
Wah Wah, the seventh full-length release by the Manchester indie rock group James, was produced by Brian Eno during the same six-week session as Laid. Although the group had always been keen on improvisation, both as their principal songwriting method and onstage, this was their first (and only) album to be comprised entirely of such material. It was Eno's idea that the group's improvisations should be recorded, having told them that he regarded this music as having equal importance to the finished songs birthed from it. However, the group told Stuart Maconie (for their authorised biography Folklore) that the album caused disagreements, particularly over Tim Booth's wish to redo some vocals and over how to deal with the finished record - originally planned as a giveaway with early copies of Laid, it was eventually issued as a limited edition several months later.
One track, Jam-J was chosen as a single, and released as a double-A side, along with "Say Something" from the album Laid.
The track "Tomorrow" was later re-recorded from scratch and placed on the band's next release, the album Whiplash as well as being culled as the second single from that record.

'While musically different, a similar burning sense of an idea whose time has come runs through Parklife, Urban Hymns, Everything Must Go, OK Computer and (What's the Story) Morning Glory?. * David Baynton-Power - drums
* Saul Davies - violin, guitar
* Jim Glennie - bass
Pleased to Meet You was the ninth studio album released by Manchester-based band James. The album was released in July 2001 via Mercury Records. Despite it being the band's first album not to reach the top 10 in the UK since Strip-mine (excepting the experimental Wah Wah), the album was widely regarded as one of their best pieces of work. Indeed, Allmusic described the album as their "tightest, freshest, most contemporary batch of songs, weatherproofed to stand the test of time" . One single, "Getting Away With It (All Messed Up)", was released from the album. Shortly after the release of the album, lead vocalist Tim Booth announced he was leaving the band. The album's front cover features a composite image of all the band members' faces.

Hey Ma (2008)
BAND MEMBERS:
* Larry Gott - guitar
* Mark Hunter- keys
* Tim Booth - vocals
* David Baynton-Power - drums
* Saul Davies - violin, guitar
* Jim Glennie - bass
In September last year the band headed off to Warsy Chateau in northern France to write and record what was to become their first new record in seven years. Their brief may have been immodest - "to not only match our earlier work but surpass it" - but the results are somewhat more spectacular: a record, Hey Ma, that recaptures the spirit of Laid and catapults James into the pantheon of artists who are more alluring and even more relevant second time around.
Warsy Chateau proved to be a unique working environment. Producer Lee 'Muddy' Baker (who'd worked with Booth on his 2004 solo album Bone) allowed the band to build their own studios in their rooms and constantly feed ideas back to him in the main studio. He also allowed the band to jam at leisure, something that always brings out the best in them - if you remember, Sit Down came out of "a twenty minute jam that only ended 'cos we were laughing too much to continue" - and ensuring a degree of spontaneity that had been lacking in the final days of James Mk1. The band wrote eight pieces in one five-hour spell and a hundred and twenty in total for a record that finally boasts eleven songs that are as good, if not better, than anything James have recorded before.
TRACKLIST:
1. "Bubbles"
2. "Hey Ma"
3. "Waterfall"
4. "Oh My Heart"
5. "Boom Boom"
6. "Semaphore"

One Man Clapping (1989)
BAND MEMBERS:
* Tim Booth
* Larry Gott
* Jim Glennie
* Gavan Whelan
* Mick Armistead – keyboards
One Man Clapping was the third album from English band James, a live album released in March 1989. The album was recorded at the Moles Club, Bath, UK on the 14 and 15 November 1988. The album was issued on their own One Man imprint of Rough Trade Records, after parting company with Blanco y Negro/Sire. To fund the album, the band had to borrow £12,000 from the Royal Bank of Scotland. Initially, the bank manager was not willing to lend the band the money, but after seeing them live in Manchester he agreed.
Because the album was self-funded, only 10,000 CD copies were produced; this has made the album highly sought after by collectors. Copies have been known to trade hands on eBay for in excess of £100.
