Along side the Real World, Putumayo and World Music Network (responsible for the 'Rough Guide' series) imprints, Hemisphere has been responsible for a number of essential "world music" releases in the last few years. This excellent 2 CD set (based on and selected from a couple of weekly BBC radio shows - including the BBC World Service's Music Without Frontiers show) is the third in the series - early volumes being 'World 2001' and 'World 2002' - and serves as a very stimulating and intriguing reminder of just how much quality music is being made outside of the "commercial" Western framework (or in some cases, ie Calexico, within it). Over thirty five tracks covering all possible corners of the globe we are treated to music of outstanding quality, much of which would be unknown to anyone who doesn't have a dedicated interest in music of a global nature. For what it's worth, some of you may have experienced the likes of Ojos De Brujo, Temple Of Sound, the late Joe Strummer & The Mescaleros, Calexico, Orchestra Baobab and Manu Chao, if so dive in here you will find plenty to saviour and enjoy. For the rest, I can't recommend this collection enough, this is the ideal (and extremely relevant) starting point for anyone wishing to explore what is a creatively vibrant source of modern music - and with recording techniques getting both better and cheaper this area of music is simply going to flourish (witness the recent creative explosion in New Zealand's own buoyant music scene). Go on - your ears will thank you guaranteed.

This is the fourth in a series of annual albums for EMI-Virgin, this radio DJ’s view of the best music in the world over the past year or so.
The album is dedicated to Joe Strummer, whose ‘Mondo Bongo’ becomes a keystone track following his far-too-early death. The spirit of Manu Chao, himself inspired by Joe Strummer, is everywhere, including several tracks by Spanish-based groups. Compared to previous years, the collection includes more European groups whose music might loosely be defined as rock in their own countries. But each of them has moved beyond the standard line-up of guitar, bass and drums, and away from the mundane back beat of so much English language rock. There’s clarinet towards the end of ‘Le Vent Nous Portera’ by Noir Desir (from Bordeaux in France), a full-blown horn section in ‘Moryak’ by Markscheider Kunst (St Petersburg, Russia), a brass band on ‘Come L’Aria’ by Banda Ionica (Sicily) and accordion on ‘Go’ by Barcelona’s Dusminguet.
Some of the selections were driven by enquiries from listeners asking for more information about how to find songs that had jumped out at them. But although such enquiries are a helpful barometer of which songs struck a chord, they may sometimes simply reflect how difficult it is to find a particular record. I may never know how many people liked a song from an album that was easy to order, but received forty letters and emails about ‘Makovienka’ by Sui Vesan, whose record label had no distribution outside Slovakia for several months.
There are a few acoustic recordings (including two contrasting songs by brilliant young fado singers from Portugal, Mariza and Lula Pena) and three that could loosely be called hip hop, of which ‘Take Care’ by Mombassa-based Nyota Ndogo has never been released outside Kenya, and ‘Mi Palava’ by Weird MC has not been available at all. About a third of the tracks (12 of 35) have African connections and two are from North America - by Calexico from Tucson, Arizona, and The Be Good Tanyas from Vancouver, Canada.
Having chosen the tracks and cleared permission to use them, the final trick is to string them together in an order which defies predictability while feeling naturally cohesive. I await your verdict on the result. - Charlie Gillett
